TVDW 06/09/2009 - Brendan Benson - Gonowhere (2009)

Eind 2005 prijkte "The Alternative To love" samen met David Gray helemaal bovenaan mijn eindejaarslijstje. Een dozijn popparels, een plaat die je nooit beu wordt. Nadien werd Benson door zijn maatje Jack White ingelijfd bij The Raconteurs, een groepje dat ook op goedkeurend geknik (en een tvdw) onthaald werd op deze blog. Nu heeft Benson eindelijk een nieuwe soloplaat, My Old Familiar Friend, en ook deze hapt lekker weg. Minder memorabel dan The Alternative..., maar de sterkste songs zijn nog steeds een fijne kruising tussen Josh Rouse en de McCartney uit de seventies. Bij sommige liedjes denk ik: dit moet Novastar ook wel goed vinden. Met een half oog las ik in de Focus Knack dat de cd amper één sterretje kreeg. Om mijn humeur niet te vergallen, heb ik de recensie maar genegeerd. Dan liever hoe ze bij het machtige Popmatters.com over de plaat schrijven:

Ook Matthew Ryan vs. the Silver State, een plaat van vorig jaar die ik via Zinnerboy kreeg toegespeeld, viel afgelopen week in de smaak. Net als de nieuwe Zoot Woman en een mix-cd met new wave nummers, gecompileerd door de Glimmer Twins, die een ideale soundtrack bij het joggen leverde. Maar de tvdw, die gaat naar Benson.
